THE SECOND-SEEDED Kafelnikov, who will face
                                      17-year-old Roger Federer of Switzerland on
                                      Friday, trails American Pete Sampras by only 345
                                      points in the ATP rankings. Sampras is resting an
injured left leg before playing in Scottsdale, Arizona beginning March 1. 

If Kafelnikov claims the 260 points awarded to the winner of this event and
accumulates enough bonus points, he could move within 30 points of
Sampras. 

First prize is $135,000.
