Davey Boy Smith Update

bulldog.bmp (117582 bytes)

The above picture is taken from a Sunday newspaper in the UK called News Of The World.   The reporter who reported this story is a man named James Millbank.  I'm sure all of you will have heard by now the story of Davey Boy Smith and his injury.  Below is the entire article that is featured in the picture.

Wrestling ace The British Bulldog has been told he will spend his life in a wheelchair after snapping his spine in the ring.  A rare infection is destroying the bones of Davey Boy Smith's back as he lies in a head-to-toe body brace in intensive care.  But speaking exclusively from his hospital bed in Canada the 35-year-old man mountain sent a typically defiant message to News of the World readers.   He fought back tears as he said:

"The doctors here haven't given me much of a chance but I will keep fighting to the end.  The pain is excruciating and I am lucky to be alive.   I cried when they told me I wouldn't be able to walk again but if anyone beat it, I can.  I have a message to all my fans in Britain and that is to never give up on me.   I won't ever let them down."

Millionaire Davey Boy broke his spine in a bout last September, but defied the pain to fight on, and it was weeks before he sought proper treatment.   He said:

"I have a very high pain threshhold and I just carried on.   I was crying and collapsing but I was unaware I had broken my back.  Now the doctors say that I have a blood infection that is eating away at my spine."

Davey Boy - who has 20-inch biceps and weighs 20 stone - left his home town of Golborne near Wigan in the late 1980s to find fame in America.  He and cousin Tommy - The Dynamite Kid - were World Wrestling Federation tag-team champions until Tommy too broke his back.  Davey Boy became a WWF Intercontinental solo champ in front of 83,000 fans at Wembley 7 years ago.  He owned a Florida mansion with wife Diane and two children Georgia and Harry before moving to Calgary - where he is now in the Rocky View Hospital.  Davey Boy was famed in the ring for his trade-mark powerslam.   Three years ago he was cleared of crippling a man with the move during a drunken attack in a Calgary nightclub.  Since his own injury Davey Boy's mum has died in Wigan, and he lost 27-year-old sister Tracey to cancer.  "They mean the world to me," he said.  "All I can do now is pray for a miracle."  A Rocky View doctor said:

"The injury is severe.  Mr Smith incurred a tremendous blow, and has undergone surgery on two smashed spinal bones at the level of his shoulder blades.  Because the injury was left for some time he has an infection which, in laymen's terms, is eating his spine."

Now being British, I've always been a big fan of the Bulldog, and I know there are a lot of others out there too.  I mean, I bet at least half of those 83,000 that were at Wembley still care about what happens to him, and I'm sure there are a lot of his fans all around the world for that matter.  Even when Davey Boy was a heel, he still got some nice pops wherever he went, when he and Owen were tag champs it was the Bulldog most people cheered for.  Taking nothing away from Owen of course, who gave Davey Boy one of his best ever matches at the European Title finals in Germany.  I gave an e-mail address a few days ago where Bulldog could be contacted, but it seems to just reply with an automatic message.  Therefore, I shall print here again the postal address where you can send letters and cards to the best professional wrestler to come out of the UK, Davey Boy Smith.
