SAN ANTONIO -- I've been reading various fishwraps from the New York area and all of the headlines seemed to be the same: New York down but not out. Okay enough already. I surrender. You win. Spurs fans will just relinquish their support for their team and the reality of this series. The mighty New York Knicks will come back and win the next four games and prove that the Spurs are over achievers. NOT!!!
Last week while enjoying the first two Finals games I had to endure listening to the verbage that came from two writers from the New York area. The spill that came from their mouths was as foul as water from the Hudson River and at times it proved to be the fuel that makes up rumors about the people of New York.
"I can't believe that the refs are letting this guy walk," said one of the writers. "Look at him. He's traveling to the paint!"
This whining went on for almost the entire game and by halftime I had had enough of this mess. So I decided to play the Texan role and confront these two on which game their watching.
"I take it you guys are from the New York Post? Let me ask you two a question. What's worse knowing that your team is overmatched or actually witnessing them being dominated by a better team from the West?"
They acted like they couldn't understand the question. It was a simple enough question that even a six year old could answer if present. So I finally got to the question at hand?
"When will you guys finally let reality sink in and come to realize that it's not that the Knicks are a good team that are being dominated by the best team in the league this year?"
"Look," the other one started, "It's like this. The Knicks DESERVE to win this series. They've been through a lot this year. They're destined to win it all."
What a bunch of garbage!
"Destined? To do what? Get their butts swept? Destiny isn't handed to you, you make your own."
I couldn't believe it. I walked back to the hospitality area and just plain forgot all about it. I wasn't going to let the ignorance of two middle-aged writers get to me. No way. Not after having many of the other media from across the country tell me that the Knicks are cooked. But it was just amazing how people could be blinded to the truth.
Now I'm not predicting that the Spurs will sweep. For some reason I still think that the Knicks have heart and that they will make this interesting.. But their fans are just something else. If Patrick Ewing could do a Willis Reed, the fans want it. If Larry Johnson could curse like a blue streak before each win, these fans want that too. They want fantasy basketball at it's best and it's just not going to happen. Reality is sinking in and it seems that most of New York can't take the one thing that may defeat them; the truth.
