I've had many people tell me that I'm lucky to be able to attend sporting events. I agree. I'm blessed. Fortunate. Honored. Any time you have the opportunity to witness history, you take advantage of it and since 1993 I have been very, very foturnate to be in the position of a sports "historian" of sorts and watch some of the best things in sports happen right here in the Alamo City. And to think it all started with the Olympic Festival and watching Rasheed Wallace and Jerry Stackhouse when they were still in high school.
Over the past five NBA seasons I've seen a lot events make history. Chuck Person hitting the 1,000 mark on three pointers. David Robinson being the fourth person to register a quadruple double. Mose Malone shooting from half court (and making it). Sean Elliott hitting that three on Memorial Day. Now comes a moment that we have all wanted to be able to see; an NBA Finals game with your favorite team. It's a dream come true for this San Antonio native and someone who used to idolize George Gervin and Larry Kenon when younger.
Over the past four months I can honestly say that being able to watch this team reach the pinnacle of success in such a short time is awe inspiring.
Just two years ago this team was 20-62. They added Tim Duncan last year. Then this year everything just clicked. A shortened season began rocky but this team believed in what had to be done. Did I expect them to make it all the way? I honestly hoped for a good showing in the playoffs. Yet here they are, a bunch of nice guys who truly like each other getting the chance to win a championship that only 13 other franchises have one and the first former ABA franchise to do so.
Will I want the champagne poured over me. You bet. I want to witness this team winning its first NBA championship. I want to witness this event not only as a sportswriter, but as a fan as well. I want the honor to witness history in the making.
