What would happen if the 1998 Spurs could play the 1999 Spurs? First let's take a look at the rosters:
| 1998 Active Roster | 1999 Active Roster |
| David Robinson | David Robinson |
| Tim Duncan | Tim Duncan |
| Jaren Jackson | Sean Elliott |
| Vinny Del Negro | Mario Elie |
| Avery Johnson | Avery Johnson |
| Will Perdue | Will Perdue |
| Monty Williams | Jaren Jackson |
| Reggie Geary | Steve Kerr |
| Malik Rose | Malik Rose |
| Carl Herrera | Jerome Kersey |
| Cory Alexander | Antonio Daniels |
| Chuck Person | Andrew Gaze |
But if this game could be staged, the Spurs team in the playoffs of 1998 would beat the current team simply because they played better as a unit. They ran a better offense than the current Spurs team and played a defense about equal to the current squad.
What happened to that 1998 team that played better than the current team? After demolishing Phoenix, they just missed their chance two games in Utah, then obliterated the Jazz in game three. It went downhill from there. Was it because of Duncan's ankle injury or was it because of Pop's failure to make adjustments or something else? Who knows, but the 1998 Spurs sure looked good there for a while.
So can we expect any more from the current Spurs squad whom I think would be beaten by the 1998 squad? Well, yes we should expect more because the 1999 season isn't over yet. Unlike some teams with loads of talent (which I will leave nameless, but you know who you are), the Spurs are filled with mostly of veterans who do not care about their stats and who are dedicated to coming together as a team.
I have high expectations for this team and believe they will be a strong UNIT by the end of the season. By the end of the season the 1999 Spurs should be able to beat the 1998 Spurs. The 1999 Spurs have a real chance at the finals if they come together as a team. If they do not play better than they played in 1998, then it is time to start pointing fingers.
My first one will be directed at Pop.
