Gregg Popovich, would not be an NBA coach, if he was not a good general manager. If Popovich was a coach looking for work, he would have no work like former Spur coach Bob Hill has now. Popovich was a good assistant coach. The evidence of that was how he proved himself at that position when he was under Larry Brown with the Spurs and under his good friend Don Nelson. But a general manager would never be an assistant coach.
Popovich should stick to what he does best. General Manager and VP of basketball operations. A high profile coach should be hired, if not this season then next season. This season hire an interim coach, and if he works out, he can have the position next season. Even if it's Del Harris for the remainder of the season, it should not be Gregg Popovich.
Candidates for interim coach would be: Spurs head assistant Hank Egan, former Spur Glenn "Doc" Rivers, Del Harris, even maybe Bob Hill, but that's a big maybe.
Next season the Spurs have to have go after a respected coach from around the league. The guy I always wanted to see at the helm in San Antonio was Orlando Magic coach Chuck Daly, that will probably never happen, but Daly would bring championship toughness to the Spurs which they really need.
A coach they may be able to get next season is Phil Jackson, come on Spurs fans how great would that be! Attracting Phil Jackson is what the Spurs should try and do. The twin towers of Duncan and Robinson along with the reuniting of Jackson's Chicago Bulls buddy Steve Kerr, could be the Spurs selling point. Jackson would teach the Spurs how to get to the finals, and all the hoopla surrounding the way a contender actually wins the championship.
Another candidate is former Spurs assistant and current Hornets coach Dave Cowens. Cowens has done a great job in his tenure with Charlotte, and is upset with the treatment he is getting from Hornets management. Cowens would be a great pick up for the Spurs coaching job also.
Popovich showed us February 28 versus the Utah Jazz, why he should not be the Spurs coach, Pop lost his cool and got two technical fouls and he was ejected from the game. Some may argue that Popovich was doing a Red Auredbarck, the legendary Celtics coach, by getting ejected to get the Spurs going. What he did was disgrace the San Antonio Spurs on a nationally televised game.
Popovich go back to the front office where you belong.
