The Astrodome
The Astrodome, opened in 1965, was the first indoor baseball
stadium. Its official name is the "Harris County Domed
Stadium". The Astrodome originally had live grass, but
during a scrimage against the Yankees, the players had difficulty
seeing fly balls. The clear roof was painted to solve the fly
ball glare, but the live grass would have to go. This led to the
invention of "Astroturf". During the first season in
the dome, the New York Mets complained that the "first of
its kind" air-conditioning was manipulating air currents
that helped the Astros long balls. This was proven wrong. Now,
the Astros organization is building a new stadium, "The
Ballpark at Union Station", which is also the "first of
its kind."
