Pittsburgh Steelers Helmet Logo History (Courtesy of Dan Rooney)

Teresa (Steeler Digest) "I've heard a million versions from fans, media, etc., etc., so I went to the source for your answer - Dan Rooney."

In 1962 the Steel industry asked him to use their logo. As a test, they put it on one side of the helmet to see how it would be accepted. They didn't want to totally commit to it at that point, just see if it was accepted by the steel industry and it's people. It was overwhelmingly accepted.

One of the biggest questions that was asked then was, why just on one side - you're same question. As the Steelers were struggling then, it was a source of interest people started to show in the team. They thought about putting it on the other side initially, but people were more interested in knowing why it was only on one side than they were in actually having it on both, that it just stayed that way.

After first using it on a gold helmet that the Steelers used in the past, they decided to change to the black helmets with the gold stripe so the logo would show up better. Almost some 40 years later, the question still is asked. It's Steelers tradition.

A Special thanks to Teresa (Steelers Digest) and Mr.Dan Rooney
