On February 17 2001, Team Oval and our supporting cast of Mom and my
Aunt set out to check out a new form of R/C, at least to us. We had a visit from two people
that participate in this form of the hobby during our first swap meet of the year and they let
us in on how much fun it was and thought we should check it out. The day started off looking
like it might be a bad trip but we decided we might as well go since we were headed south and
hopefully it would get better. So off we headed to Rocky Grove, Pennsylvania to check out the
2001 NR/CTPA Winter Super Pull.
So you ask what this means right? We headed south to check out radio
control truck and tractor pulling at some of it's best. During this event they also had monster
truck racing and during the 18th they were going to be having a R/C monster truck freestyle
event. So what did we think? This was definatly a fun event to watch. It was like nothing I
had ever seen. I've read about it in the magazines and on the internet but you really have
to watch it in person to get the full effect. There is nothing quite like the sight of a
1/10 scale vehicle pulling upwards of 500+ pounds! You'll notice in some of the pictures
that you can get a good look at the pulling sled. Count the "saddle weights" piled on the
sled, those are each equal to 45#!
I'm still not sure what my favorite class was. I'd have to go with
either Pro stock/Super stock tractor or Big rig I think. The most impressive class I think
was the "Insane" pullers. These vehicles weight in at about 15# and use upwards of 72 cells
and twin motors! To say that all hell broke loose when they "opened" up the throttle is
certainly an understatement! It was standard procedure to have everyone move out from in
front of the end of the dirt track before these guys ran. :o)
Anyway, it was an experience that we won't soon forget and we plan
on making it to at least one more of the events this year that is in Hamburg, New York. Who
knows, maybe one of these days you'll visit our website to find Team Oval Pulling Team
has been added to the list of things we do! Check out all the photos to the left of our trip
to this event and before you leave remember to visit the links below.
Update 2002
We made another trip to Rocky Grove for the 2002 NR/CTPA Winter Super Pull and had a great time again. I didn't get any pics of the monsters this time (maybe next year) but there are new pulling pics to look at. Check out the one John Deere Superstock puller. The pics of it don't do the mural on the side justice.........awesome! Till next time........enjoy the pics.
